Day 020 – Competing commitments

What do Warren Buffett & Bill Gates both attribute to their incredible success?

The 2 richest men in the world

At one point, Warren Buffett and Bill Gates were the 2 richest men in the world. An incredible achievement I think. Money runs the world, and with money you can be an awesome force for good (as these 2 men have been over the years).

I remember reading the biography of Warren Buffett (1000 pages if I remember correctly 💁🏼‍♀️), and in a section of the book, the author recollects the meeting of Gates and Buffett for the first time.

When asked what they attribute to their amazing wealth, they both said at the same time:

Stretched thin

This story is a wonderful reminder for me right now, as I feel a little overstretched lately. I’ve started a group with 12/13 year olds to make mountain bike tracks on our family farm. Normally once a week, lately it’s been 2–3 days a week. It’s A passion project, and I’m really excited to see what comes to fruition. Not just for the track itself, but for the memories these boys will remember for a long time to come!

I was obsessed with mountain biking as a young lad, and it makes me so excited to be able to share the joys of the sport with others.

Opportunity cost

It was taking a little too long to make a track, so my Dad decided to hire a bobcat for a few days (ongoing). And my golly, it ripped through and we have made some serious progress. Of course every opportunity comes with its own costs, and the cost of committing to this project is time away from the business.

It makes me wonder each time, “am I being focused?”
